It's been an interesting peroid of time after my last event (Nation's Triathlon), as with the week I gave myself as a recovery and sanity reset, I've had what amounts to a scant three weeks for preparation for my next event. Two if you count a mild taper.
What my next event?
Well, this Saturday, in Salisbury, MD, I'll be participating in the Seagull Century. I selected the Assateague 100 mile route as opposed to the new Snow Hill 100 mile route or the Princess Anne 100 km route and will be giving it a go with a couple of my friends, Gregg and Jaime. This will also be my first attempt at completing 100 miles in a day.
Yep, my first 100 mile bike ride.
The closest I've come, so far, to 100 miles has been the 60 mile ride this past Sunday. Gregg and I took our time, stopping for barbeque at the halfway point, as there's nothing quite like a half rack of ribs to fuel oneself for another 30 miles!
Am I worried that I've never done 100 miles before? In some ways, I am, because there's always that unknown factor out there when doing a distance that one's never done before, but on the other hand, it's not a 'race' per se, but more of a day long sightseeing event.
Will my quads cramp up like they did at the Rock n' Roll Arizona Marathon? Will it become a 10 mph grind fest that will last into the evening? Will I become so incredibly chafed that I'll have to adopt a John Wayne swagger? All of these answers are pretty much unknown.
What I do know is that this will be a low stress event where I won't have to worry about my splits or my overall time, but at the same time I will get a feeling for how far 100 miles really feels. Tack on another 12 miles and presto! The bike distance for an Ironman.
Hopefully, I will remember to bring a camera, or a camera phone, so I can take pictures and videos of our ride.
After the Seagull? Setting our sights on 2011! A bunch of Oly Triathlons and one epic run!
